Located in the midst of Karakum Desert, The Door to Hell is a natural gas field fire in Derweze Village of Ahal Province, Turkmenistan. The Door to Hell is a rich natural gas area, which is still red-hot. The orange-red flames were lit by Soviet Petrochemical scientists in 1971. The order of burning sulfur diffuses this hot spot for some distance.
Renowned internationally, this flaming gas crater is the biggest gas reserve in the world. Since fire symbolizes hell; the locals referred to this area of fire, boiling mud and red blazes as the “Door to Hell”.
In April 2010, the President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow had visited the site and ordered that the hole should be closed, or measures be taken to limit its influence on the development of other natural gas fields in the area.
Its 2013, and the hole is still burning. The future of this area in the next 20 years seems bright since Turkmenistan plans to upsurge its production of natural gas with the intention to increase its export of gas to China, India, Iran, Russia, and Western Europe.
