Sacrifice Dark Fishing Spider Mating

Dark fishing spider is a monogynous species, which means they mate only once in their lifetime. Death is obligatory consequence for a male dark fishing spider. When they copulate, they taste death. For them, love is a one shot deal.

A female fishing spider grows up to 3 inches (7,5 cm) and is usually 14 times heavier than a male who span just an inch (2,5 cm). The reason behind the male’s death is due to his unusual physiology and strange anatomy. With the commencement of their mating game, a male inflates the hematodochal bulb inside the pedipalp, through which he gives away sperms in the female. They are unlike the other species that deflate the bulb after mating. This inflation results in sudden rise in his blood pressure.

As soon as he transfers, he curls up and becomes unresponsive. During their copulation, the male spider will probably lose his genitalia, which often get broken off inside the female. This creates a plug which prevents the female from mating again. The blood continues to pump for the next three hours, leaving zero possibility of his survival.
