It is believed that the salty content helps them to procure sodium for their daily diet. Drinking of tears by butterflies is not a very common phenomenon. This spectacle can usually be seen in the areas of Amazon.

These areas being far away from the Atlantic Ocean, lacks the presence of salt. In addition to sodium, these tears also comprise of high protein content, which makes the tears highly desirable amongst the butterflies.

The butterflies get attracted to the turtles of this area which eventually invites other butterflies in the process to that site to feed as well.

However, the turtles do not seem to be enjoying being fed by the butterflies. The turtle appears to pull its head away as the orange and yellow butterflies take turns for a drink. This relationship wherein one animal gets benefitted by another animal is known as ‘commensalism’.
